Chatrooms, blogs & social networking sites

Social networking sites, blogs and chatrooms are great places for children to 'virtually' meet friends, have fun and develop their social skills.

We offer both unmoderated adult chatrooms (which are Content Locked and only available to over 18s) and fully moderated chatrooms, known as Powerchat.

We also host:

  • Moderated blogs where people can post their own comments and pictures

How we protect children

All T-Mobile hosted services are either only available to over 18s or are fully moderated, which means that a trained person checks every message or image that appears in the chatroom. All unsuitable content such as foul or abusive language, personal information or details about meeting up offline will be removed.

There is a warning process for users who post unsuitable content and persistent offenders are banned. Anyone attempting illegal activities will be immediately reported to the authorities.

Our blogs and flirting service are also fully moderated.

Tips on keeping your child safe

While chatrooms, blogs, video sharing and social networking sites can be great places for children to communicate, it's important to talk to them about what they can do to keep themselves safe online..

Regularly discussing any worries your children may have is one of the best ways to keep them safe. It's also worth encouraging them to follow these common sense guidelines:

  • Use a nickname rather than their real name and keep all aspects of their identity private
  • If they have a personal profile, they shouldn't reveal their name, address or any details that could identify them
  • Be aware how easy it is to change or share photos or video clips - think carefully about where they could end up before sending anything
  • Be wary of someone who wants to chat one to one outside a chatroom
  • Never arrange to meet anyone they have only been in touch with online - people are often not who they say they are
  • They shouldn't accept mobile phones or any gifts from anyone they meet online
  • They should try not to get angry or respond to unpleasant remarks - the best way to deal with bullying is not to react
  • Use the service's block / ignore functions to stop people they don't like from contacting them
  • Log out if the content starts to upset them
  • Tell you, a teacher or a trusted adult about anything unpleasant that happens in a chatroom
  • If they don't feel they can tell an adult about something upsetting, be aware how to get help. To talk to someone in confidence online go to www.there4me.com where they can chat online to a counsellor about problems. They can also call the NSPCC's ChildLine service on 08001111
